Welcome to my blog, “Ten Toe Joe”. My name is Mike and I am a soldier in the U.S. Army. My whole life I have hated running long distance. My first “long” run was a school 5k in the seventh grade. I ran it in about 21 minutes if I remember correctly, but I hated every step of it. In high school I was a sprinter and even the 400m dash was considered long to me. I went straight to the army from high school and for the past six years running has been a chore. The army way is to run until it hurts, then run harder. When this is the only experience you have with running, you quickly come to dread it.

Several months ago, a co-worker convinced me that running didn’t have to be that way and you could actually enjoy it. He talked non-chalantly about his 6+ mile runs which to me sounded like a nightmare. Finally, I got out and started running with him. Before I knew it, I was going on seven mile runs. I was amazed at how enjoyable it was. My miles have since dropped off, but I have a fire in my belly now and I am determined to build up to a marathon.

This blog will document my journey as I go from an anti-runner to a marathoner. My wife, Dayoung, will hopefully be with me every step of the way. We want running to be something that we can share and enjoy together for life.
